On a sunny day, the Vergulden Eenhoorn is an oasis of peace and calm in the middle of the city, where you can savour drinks and dishes made using locally sourced ingredients. The terrace of this 300-year-old farmhouse is surrounded by a leafy picnic garden with its very own boulodrome (pitch where you play boules - and yes, that is the accurate French word for it).

The clue is in the name at De Biertuin (the beer garden), where the enclosed roadside terrace has tables outside all year round. It’s a top spot for friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere, pub-style food and, of course, a large selection of great beers.

Brouwerij ’t IJ was an independent local microbrewery long before anyone dreamed up the modern terminology. The brewery bar is housed in a former bath house next door to a proper Dutch windmill. There’s a large enclosed terrace with rows of picnic tables, which stays busy in all weathers. You can arrive by boat and moor on the quay, and also take a tour of the brewery. It’s a great spot to enjoy some of Amsterdam’s finest craft beers and at a better price than you’ll find them elsewhere.

Café Restaurant De Plantage is housed in one of the elegant buildings of Artis Zoo, though you don’t have to visit the zoo to enjoy the leafy, park-like atmosphere. The café itself gives an inside-outside feeling, and the terrace spills out onto an open square with pretty lights in the trees after dark. There’s a varied, modern lunch and dinner menu and a good wine list.
