The greats of the art world

The extensive collection of the Stedelijk Museum is similar in style to the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago. Design has been given a permanent place in the museum for the first time, with big names such as Joseph Hoffmann, Gerrit Rietveld and Tapio Wirkkala. Contemporary artists are also strongly represented with masterpieces by Maarten Baas, Barbara Bloom, Rineke Dijkstra, Marlene Dumas, Sheila Hicks, Jeff Koons, Wolfgang Tillmans, Edward Kienholz, Willem de Kooning and Andy Warhol, among others. Since the renovation and expansion of the building, the Stedelijk can show more of the famous collection than ever before, thanks to the many new museum rooms.

Innovative exhibition halls

In addition to the large halls for exhibitions , the appearance of the museum itself has also changed considerably during the renovation: the building no longer looks away from Museumplein , but looks out onto it. The impressive foyer and restaurant look inviting and there is a futuristic-looking new wing , designed by Benthem Crouwel Architects , which Amsterdammers also call the 'bathtub'.

Major movements in art, design and architecture

Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is the must-see museum for modern and contemporary art and design.

The collection is one of the most important collections of modern and contemporary art and design in the world. The most significant art and design movements are represented by (inter)national artists and designers who are part of the changes of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Together with both well-known and lesser-known works by, among others, Vincent van Gogh, Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, Marlene Dumas, Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock, Nicolaas Warb, Gerrit Rietveld, El Anatsui, Rineke Dijkstra, Danielle Dean, Sarah Zapata, Simnikiwe Buhlungu and Charley Toorop

The collection is arranged thematically and shows that art and design are closely linked to social developments. This provides a new perspective and shows that there is not one art history, but that there are countless perspectives.
