Best terraces in Amsterdam Zuid
Spend an afternoon in the sunshine on the terraces of Amsterdam Zuid. This exclusive area is home to the famous Vondelpark, trendy De Pijp and dozens of tree-lined streets, creating the ideal spot for a relaxing al fresco meal or cocktails.
While the city centre boasts most of the historic canals, Amsterdam Zuid has its own share of waterside terraces, including Strandzuid: a place where guests can visit the beach while staying in the city. The restaurant’s menu has plenty of fish, meat and vegetarian options and for a summertime flavour boost, many dishes are prepared on the traditional charcoal grill. Strandzuid is located just a short walk away from the gorgeous floral gardens of Beatrixpark and the RAI Amsterdam conference centre.
Gent aan de Schinkel
Gent aan de Schinkel is a great little Belgian-style café located just behind the Vondelpark. Enjoy views of the water while boats pass by on the Schinkel River. The selection of beers and informal atmosphere make for a great afternoon by the water.
Just up the road, Schinkelhaven is a cosy neighbourhood joint - the perfect spot to read the morning paper with a coffee or have an afterwork borrel. The large streetside terrace is shaded by umbrellas and comes alive in the late afternoon.
At the southernmost tip of the Vondelpark you will find the idyllic Vondeltuin. Here you can enjoy the greenery, a relaxed atmosphere and tasty snacks and drinks surrounded by the sound of bird song. There’s a great park for the kids to play in whilst parents natter away on the garden terrace.
't Blauwe Theehuis
In the middle of the famed Vondelpark you’ll find the (perhaps equally famous) ‘t Blauwe Theehuis. Built in 1937 and now featuring over 700 outdoor seats, this café, whose building has been likened to a spaceship, has one of the largest terraces in Europe. Enjoy the singing birds, fresh air and soothing sights along with a sandwich, snacks and a drink to top it all off.
Carter Bar & Kitchen has a comfortable outdoor space on the Valeriusstraat in Zuid, within walking distance from both Vondelpark and Museumplein. Enjoy modern French bistro dishes in the chic and sophisticated interiors or delicious cocktails on the sun-drenched terrace.
Feel like a real Parisian at this stylish brasserie located just a few minutes from Vondelpark. Guests can sit in the sun almost all day long on the large, crisp white terrace and enjoy a club sandwich, one of their wafer-thin pizzas or quintessentially French dishes such as confit duck. Finish off your meal with a classic martini, served the way you like it.
With its iconic 1920s architecture, Wildschut is one of Amsterdam’s most well-known and oldest grand cafes. The large terrace is particularly recognisable and offers a great place to people-watch while soaking up some rays. Tuck into international dishes from the varied menu.
Be quick if you want a seat on the terrace at this cosy café in the heart of De Pijp—Venster 33 is a favourite in the neighbourhood, offering delicious food and a friendly atmosphere. The café celebrates all that is Amsterdam by sourcing the wine, beer and baked goods on its menu from local producers.
On weekdays, visit Volt to enjoy the late afternoon sun with a drink—gin and tonics are the specialty, but the beer menu is extensive and local—and bar bites, including charcuterie and cheese platters as well as the Dutch favourite bitterballen. Volt opens earlier on weekends for lunch, serving up poached eggs, sandwiches and, for those that partied a little too hard the night before, the Hangover Cure: a Bloody Mary.
This modern brown cafe is a favoured neighbourhood haunt in De Pijp. The sprawling terrace pulls in a great mix of young people, students and well-seasoned locals and comes alive in the late-afternoon sun. On the vast menu you’ll find a great range of reasonably priced beers along with borrel snacks, bistro fare and pub classics.
De Tulp in De Pijp gives you the real jungle experience. The interior design is colourful and Caribbean, which, together with the collection of plants, makes for an exotic vibe. You can have lunch here, dinner, a snack or simply sip on a tropical cocktail. When the weather permits, have a sunny swing on the veranda or a drink on the colourful terras of the Marie Heinekenplein.
This cafe-bar is a bit of a hidden gem in De Pijp. Tolbar is part of Cinetol, a creative space and venue for art and culture, so there’s always something more to enjoy than just the food, drinks and a sunny spot on the terrace. Enjoy a sandwich for lunch, socialise with friends during the evening, or chow down on hearty comfort foods for dinner.
