Best terraces in Amsterdam Zuid

Spend an afternoon in the sunshine on the terraces of Amsterdam Zuid. This exclusive area is home to the famous Vondelpark, trendy De Pijp and dozens of tree-lined streets, creating the ideal spot for a relaxing al fresco meal or cocktails.

While the city centre boasts most of the historic canals, Amsterdam Zuid has its own share of waterside terraces, including Strandzuid: a place where guests can visit the beach while staying in the city. The restaurant’s menu has plenty of fish, meat and vegetarian options and for a summertime flavour boost, many dishes are prepared on the traditional charcoal grill. Strandzuid is located just a short walk away from the gorgeous floral gardens of Beatrixpark and the RAI Amsterdam conference centre.

Gent aan de Schinkel is a great little Belgian-style café located just behind the Vondelpark. Enjoy views of the water while boats pass by on the Schinkel River. The selection of beers and informal atmosphere make for a great afternoon by the water.

Just up the road, Schinkelhaven is a cosy neighbourhood joint - the perfect spot to read the morning paper with a coffee or have an afterwork borrel. The large streetside terrace is shaded by umbrellas and comes alive in the late afternoon.

Feel like a real Parisian at this stylish brasserie located just a few minutes from Vondelpark. Guests can sit in the sun almost all day long on the large, crisp white terrace and enjoy a club sandwich, one of their wafer-thin pizzas or quintessentially French dishes such as confit duck. Finish off your meal with a classic martini, served the way you like it.

On weekdays, visit Volt to enjoy the late afternoon sun with a drink—gin and tonics are the specialty, but the beer menu is extensive and local—and bar bites, including charcuterie and cheese platters as well as the Dutch favourite bitterballen. Volt opens earlier on weekends for lunch, serving up poached eggs, sandwiches and, for those that partied a little too hard the night before, the Hangover Cure: a Bloody Mary.

De Tulp in De Pijp gives you the real jungle experience. The interior design is colourful and Caribbean, which, together with the collection of plants, makes for an exotic vibe. You can have lunch here, dinner, a snack or simply sip on a tropical cocktail. When the weather permits, have a sunny swing on the veranda or a drink on the colourful terras of the Marie Heinekenplein.

This cafe bar is a bit of a hidden gem in De Pijp. Tolbar is part of Cinetol, a creative space and venue for art and culture, so there’s always something more to enjoy than just the food, drinks and a sunny spot on the terrace.
