Traditionally, most activities during Chinese New Year take place on Nieuwmarkt and Zeedijk in Amsterdam, but there are usually also festivities on Dam Square. Chinese New Year begins every year between January 21 and February 20. In 2027, Chinese New Year falls on February 6 and celebrates the Year of the Goat (or the Sheep).

Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year, is the most important event on the Chinese calendar and is celebrated worldwide.

The Buddhist temple Fo Guang Shan He Hua stands in Amsterdam's Chinese Nieuwmarkt neighborhood. The Chinese New Year celebration takes place annually at this Chinese temple. At various locations throughout the city, attention is paid to the Chinese New Year with celebrations and activities.
