Tips for Valentine's Day in Amsterdam
24 February 2026

The beauty of Amsterdam's Sunday roast scene lies in its variety. Some restaurants stay close to the British blueprint, while others treat it as a starting point rather than a rulebook. At Williams Farmhouse, all the classic trimmings are present in elegant farmhouse-style surroundings, while Café Vertigo serves a traditional roast overlooking Vondelpark. Mr Porter Steakhouse takes things in a more decadent direction with its Sunday Feast: perfectly cooked steaks, pork belly with crisp crackling, Yorkshire puddings, cocktails and views of the Royal Palace on Dam Square.

Café Nieuw keeps the focus firmly on sharing, bringing together fennel sausage, slow-cooked beef, crispy pork belly, seasonal vegetables and gravy for a leisurely afternoon around the table. At Nela, the communal spirit lives on in a family-style brunch built around meat skewers cooked over the restaurant’s open fire. Even vegetarians are well catered for: Mr. Watson Botanical Roast Room’s charcoal-grilled lion’s mane [a meaty mushroom] steak is every bit the worthy centrepiece. However you like your Sundays, Amsterdam has a table waiting. That said, these are the serious contenders for the best in the city.

Newly introduced at the recently refurbished Café George, this is one of Amsterdam's finest British-style Sunday roasts. Generous slices of rare Dutch Holstein entrecôte come with crispy beef-fat roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, honey-glazed carrots, charred pointed cabbage, tender-crisp broccoli and rich gravy. We’d happily add a dollop of horseradish sauce, but otherwise it’s hard to fault. A vegetarian pie is available. Served every Sunday.

The Sunday Roast at this French bistro in De Pijp takes a decidedly Gallic approach to the British classic. It begins with an optional starter of snow peas, Brillat-Savarin cheese, pearl couscous and a poached egg dusted with sumac, before a family-style roast arrives with potatoes and a bracing green salad. Alongside classic roast chicken, there’s always a second centrepiece, which might be côte de boeuf, bavette, fish or a vegetarian dish. And roast poussin with sauce Alsacienne, shallot confit and broccolini proves that French flair and British Sunday roast traditions make excellent bedfellows.

A proper Sunday Roast is the draw at this neighbourhood favourite in Oost. Run by a Dutch couple with a clear understanding of British pub traditions, it serves rotating roasts of beef, lamb or pork, alongside all the classic trimmings. There’s always a vegetarian option, too. Word has spread well beyond the local postcode, judging by the number of beaming British locals at the tables.

On the first Sunday of every month, Restaurant Lazuur in Noord offers a three-course Sunday roast with ever-changing seasonal roast themes.
