Nicole Beutler Project & Rematriation - Room in our House

2 men meet. Their strength lies within their bodies. Both dancers live in the here and now. At the same time, they are connected by a complex colonial history. One is the child of survivors, the other the heir of oppressors. 2 worlds colliding. Is peace possible? English spoken.

Background

400 years ago, Dutch ships sailed up the Hudson River and met the Haudenosaunee, the original inhabitants of North America. A special agreement was formed between the 2 groups, recorded in the Two Row Wampum: 2 lines traveling side by side along the river of life, one for the Haudenosaunee in their canoe, one for the Dutch in their ship. Living together in peace, without dominating one another.

A performance about peace

The narrator guides the audience through stories, history, and indigenous wisdom. Dance, music, and text intertwine into a ritual in which memory and hope exist side by side.

ROOM IN OUR HOUSE is the first chapter of CLOSE ENCOUNTER / Future Stories, a new series by Nicole Beutler Projects, in which encounters with other perspectives on the world take center stage. A performance about peace – not as a self-evident given, but as something that must be constantly reinvented.
