Cruquius Museum

Discover the fascinating story of the draining of the Haarlemmermeer in the Cruquius Museum. In the iconic steam pumping station De Cruquius – a top 100 national monument – you will marvel at the power of the 19th century steam engine that defeated the 'Waterwolf'. In the adjacent Cruquius pavilion you will wander past large and small stories from the history of the Haarlemmermeerpolder after the draining. Cruquius Museum tells about the struggle for dry feet in a wet country, then and now.
Largest steam engine in the world
Together with the Leeghwater and Lynden pumping stations, the Cruquius pumped the large, dangerous Haarlemmermeer dry between 1848 and 1852, which threatened Amsterdam, Haarlem and Leiden. The pumping station is named after the famous surveyor, hydraulic engineer and astronomer Nicolaus Cruquius who lived from 1678 to 1754. Today, the Cruquius pumping station is an important industrial monument due to its special architecture and rich history. The highlight of every visit? The demonstration of the largest Cornish steam engine in the world!
The treasure trove of Haarlemmermeer heritage
The Cruquius pavilion, located in the garden of Gemaal De Cruquius, tells the story of life in the polder after the reclamation. Here you can discover how pioneers developed the new land Haarlemmermeer into the dynamic region it is today, using special objects, photos, films and an interactive water map.
There are audio tours (also in English), treasure hunts, theatrical tours and steam labs for children. And don't forget to visit the museum shop for original gifts: from Haarlemmermeer beer to books and from tulip vases to toys.
Complete your day with a visit to Tea House Cruquius, right on the Ringvaart, for coffee, lunch or drinks with a view of the pumping station. Cruquius also offers plenty of opportunities for special occasions: from meetings and presentations to weddings and events in the atmospheric halls of the pavilion – with a view of the pumping station.
