19 September 2024

Sanskrit for ‘joy of life’, this store lives up to its name with a dreamy mix of slow fashion and homeware that feels like a deep breath in boutique form. Think earth-hued, hand-stitched pieces made in India and Nepal, where every purchase helps provide craftspeople with a fair and steady income. And just when you’re lulled into zen minimalism, the store surprises with a playful lineup of local labels like FANT, Tweek Eek and Atelier Mooien.
ATELIER SUKHA | Haarlemmerstraat 110 | Haarlemmerbuurt

Shop local icons of art, style & luxury at Hotel de l’Europe’s chic in-house concept store. Prices run from €35 to €35,000, so there’s something for everyone, from unique gifts and souvenirs to Dutch design that’ll delight you for years. Think stylish handbags, sublimely scented candles, sleek coffee table books, quirky Heineken collectables, as well as art and sculpture by local artists in residence.
IN-HUYS | Nieuwe Doelenstraat 10 | Nieuwmarktbuurt

Seeking something that oscillates between elegance and eccentricity? A ceramic candlestick shaped like a parakeet? Check. Sage-scented dishwashing liquid? Double-check. This is your petite playground for quirky finds with personality. The store founders, Jonett and Cora, have travelled wide and eyed carefully, so many pieces are rare finds not seen anywhere else in the Netherlands.
MAISONNL | Utrechtsestraat 118 | Eastern Canal Belt

Tucked between the canals is a modern Wunderkammer for the curious and slightly morbid. 19th-century glass eyeballs, framed stick insects, porcelain skulls and insect specimens sit alongside unisex jewellery and quirky accessories. Equal parts boutique and cabinet of curiosities, it’s the kind of shop where you linger, wide-eyed, imagining the story behind each oddity.
THE OTHERIST | Leliegracht 6 | Western Canal Belt

Part décor shop, part gift trove, it’s nearly impossible to leave here without something delightfully original, whether for your home or tucked in your suitcase as a souvenir. Whimsy is the name of the game, with the sort of finds that turn everyday corners into conversation starters. Shelves brim with Noord-inspired StoryTiles, popsicle wall hangings, dip-dyed pastel candles that are perhaps too pretty to burn and stainless steel St. Andrews cross signet rings.
KOST & INWONING | Johan van Hasseltkade 318 | Buikslotermeer

Noord locals Marike Holla and Freya Brown (with backgrounds in styling, merchandising, dressmaking and store management) are the dream team behind this mini-warehouse. Their secret? They try on every style, ensuring each piece delivers far beyond hanger appeal. Every shelf seems to whisper, “Look closer” at the sustainable international labels (about 20% Dutch), spanning butter-soft ankle boots, striking ceramics, playful home accessories and gifts galore.
PEK&KLEREN | Van der Pekstraat 56-58 | Van der Pekbuurt

Little wardrobes get a second life at this charming children's shop, which specialises in pre-loved apparel (sizes 0–12) from premium brands like Donsje, Mini Rodini, Bobo Choses and Dr Martens. Alongside the fashion, you'll find shelves of tiny treasures with serious cool-kid cred, as well as books and gifts that make it hard to leave empty-handed. The same duo runs Rookie's sister store on Van der Pekstraat.
ROOKIE | Purmerplein 20 | Tuindorp Nieuwendam

Head east to find a collection of cheerful home décor inspired by the natural world. Good vibes only in the shape of sunny mugs, bird-emblazoned bowls and brass doorknobs that practically wink. There are also vintage furniture pieces that’ll have your friends wondering if you were always this cool. The jewellery line is just as charming, with statement charms, slogan bracelets and character necklaces. Whether grabbing something small for a friend or treating yourself to something larger, there’s a perfect find.
ALL THE LUCK IN THE WORLD | Linnaeusstraat 20 | Oosterparkbuurt

‘The Fair East’ wears its ethos proudly, billing itself as home to the most extensive fair-fashion collection in the Benelux. Step inside and you’ll find an upbeat mix of ethical, well-made local labels: whimsical boxer shorts, geometric shoppers, chic recycled raincoats, even plant-powered skincare. Founder Magali Heuberger sums it up best: ‘The idea for this sustainable warehouse came from my love of handicrafts, the maker’s industry and the knowledge that we have to take care of our planet and its people.’

JOHNNY AT THE SPOT | Jan Pieter Heijestraat 94 | Oud-West

With a background in architecture and interior design, it’s no coincidence that Jessica Chapman’s “little store selling lovely objects” always looks ready for its close-up. Chapman believes “in the unique value of simple things” such as handmade jewellery and homewares from small design studios and makers, as well as books, natural skincare, plants and dried flowers. Tip: while you’re here, also check out The Maker Store in the adjacent De Hallen cultural complex.
GATHERSHOP | Hannie Dankbaarpassage 19 | Oud-West

Born from the passion of two thrift-loving friends, this concept store has grown into a popular mini-chain mixing own-brand fashion, jewellery, homeware and gifts. Pop into the store on Jan Eef (or one of their other outposts in West, Oost, Centrum and Zuid) and you’ll find padded kimono jackets, playful statement jewellery and fun home accessories. The vibe is equal parts quirky and modern cool, with designs that feel personal and never mass-produced.
THINGS I LIKE THINGS I LOVE | Jan Evertsenstraat 106 | De Baarsjes

Back when they were neighbours in De Pijp, founders Anna de Lanoy Meijer and Nina Poot began importing eclectic finds. Soon, their side project grew into one of Amsterdam’s most distinctive concept stores, where contrasts rule and everyday style feels anything but ordinary. Their De Pijp boutique reflects that evolution, filled with colourful ceramics, playful homeware and jewellery that ranges from dainty gold charms to bold statement pieces (piercing studio included). There’s a second Amsterdam location in Centrum (Herengracht 369).
ANNA+NINA | Gerard Doustraat 94 | De Pijp

Step into serenity at this white-washed concept store, where minimalist chic gets a soulful, bohemian twist. Think delicate Dutch jewellery, chunky Danish boots, slinky reversible silk tops and versatile fluffy vests. Cottoncake also has its own line of easy-wear basics, perfumes and soy-wax candles, including the best-selling Love Shack, a cedarwood-and-vetiver blend that smells like crackling campfires and borrowed boyfriend sweaters.
COTTONCAKE, 1e van der Helststraat 76HS, De Pijp

This foodies’ wonderland has breathed new life into a former butcher’s shop in Oud-Zuid, transforming the corner building into a concept store brimming with…well…treasures. Not everything is edible, but it is all a feast for the eyes: think beautifully set tables, curated cookbooks and chic homeware. And when browsing works up an appetite, the deli at the front is ready with good coffee and tasty bites to keep your treasure hunt going.
