ARTIS-Micropia celebrates it’s 10 years anniversary! Come and discover the invisible world of microbes through interactive setups, 40 different types of living microbes and the Lab Talks, a mini-lecture every month on a new topic. ARTIS-Micropia is located right in the heart of Amsterdam. Take tram 14 from Amsterdam Central Station to ARTIS. Tram lines 7 and 19 also stop nearby. Metro station Waterlooplein is a 10-minute walk away.

How to visit ARTIS-Micropia with your City Card

You do not need to make a reservation in advance to visit ARTIS-Micropia with your City Card. You can have your City Card scanned at the entrance. Make sure your City Card is valid at the time of your visit.

ARTIS Micropia

ARTIS-Micropia is the only microbe museum in the world celebrating its 10th anniversary! Microbes are also called microorganisms. They exist in all kinds of forms. It is estimated that there are over a hundred million different species. Did you know that there are even luminous microbes? If you look at life very closely, a completely new world opens up for you.

Making the invisible visible

Through interactive setups, 40 different types of living microbes and the Lab Talks, a mini-lecture every month on a new topic, Micropia makes complex microbiological knowledge understandable for you. In Micropia you come into contact with the wonders of microbes. Microbes are often associated with disease and destruction, but these microscopic life forms are the basis of life on our planet.

Two-thirds of all life on Earth is invisible. In Micropia the invisible is made visible and you discover the indispensable role of these invisible helpers. For example, microalgae in the ocean produce almost half of all oxygen in our atmosphere and fungi and bacteria ensure that organic material is recycled into new raw materials.

Microbiome

Microbes are everywhere, including on and in the human body. In fact, without the collection of all micro-organisms in the intestines, also called the microbiome, humans cannot live. The microbiome helps with digestion and works with your immune system. The microbiome communicates with your brain and even influences your behavior and mood.

In short, microbes are indispensable for all life on earth.

10 years of ARTIS-Micropia - a festive year with various activities

To celebrate the 10th anniversary, the museum organizes special exhibitions and activities throughout the year. The anniversary exhibition ARTIS-Micropia Art & Design Award can be seen from September 30, 2024 to February 17, 2025. The four bio-artworks on display in which art, science and nature come together provide a unique look at the impact of microbiology on life. And during the Christmas holidays we have a fun workshop for children where you can make your own microbe cuddly toy.
