A debut film that changed French cinema

Lola is the 1961 debut of director Jacques Demy and is considered a key work of the French Nouvelle Vague. The film is set in the port city of Nantes and follows a chain of chance encounters between characters whose lives intersect without them realizing it. Demy combines the lightheartedness of a musical with the melancholy of real life.

Coincidence and love in Nantes

Cabaret dancer Lola, played by Anouk Aimée, has been waiting for years for the sailor with whom she has a child. Meanwhile, an old childhood friend falls hopelessly in love with her. The characters constantly just miss each other, or meet at the wrong moment. In this way, Demy constructs a bittersweet labyrinth of near-loves, in which chance pulls the strings.
