Get to know your neighbours
All events are free to attend. This is possible because the Bredewegfestival is organised by neighbourhood volunteers. The cosy atmosphere makes it so unique. The festival brings the community together and there is really something for everyone.
Poetry under the lampshade
Although the annual festival is officially on the day before and day of King’s Day, the appearance of lampshades throughout the neighbourhood a couple weeks before is when it really begins. Then, as the sun sets, an evening of wine and words takes place with 'Poëzie onder de lampenkap' (poetry under the lampshade).
In the weeks leading up to King’s Day there are various cultural activities to enjoy – creative workshops, walking routes, and a pub quiz.
King's Night
A children's opera takes place late afternoon on King's Night and is followed by Het Koningsmaal (the King's Dinner), where people enjoy a meal together with about 1,000 of their neighbours. The highlight of the King's Night programme is undoubtably 'Opera Op Straat' (opera on the street), held later in the evening.
Working together with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Dutch National Opera Academy, the National Masterclass Orchestral Conducting, the Netherlands Chamber Choir and local theatre-makers, it is a unique opportunity for emerging and seasoned talent to collaborate.
King's Day
The whole neighbourhood is abuzz with activity on King's Day. Multiple stages are set up with live music, and there is street theatre, circus acts, sports activities, food trucks and a big flea market. An event full of culture, music and fun for the whole family!
