Akira (4K Restoration)

A classic of Japanese anime on the big screen

Director Katsuhiro Otomo adapted his own manga series into the animated film Akira . The film was released in the late 1980s and opened the door to Japanese anime for a Western audience in the early 1990s. Almost 40 years later, the film returns to Lab111 in Amsterdam. On the big screen, the detailed artwork and powerful soundtrack come into their own even more strongly.

Story: Neo-Tokyo after the Third World War

On the ruins of Tokyo, devastated by World War III, Neo-Tokyo rises. A dark city where motorcycle gangs and rebels control the streets. The government is secretly holding three children with special gifts captive. When one of them escapes, she is hit by motorcyclist and gang member Tetsuo. Thus, Tetsuo and his friends become embroiled in a major conspiracy with far-reaching consequences.
