Viola as the voice of exile
Karam Al Zouhir is originally from Damascus and now lives between Marseille and Strasbourg. On stage, he uses the viola as a solo instrument: a special choice. He explores the warm, woody sound of the instrument to musically depict the feeling of 'being somewhere else'. His voice adds an extra layer to that.
Music meets poetry
Mashka Daym (which means 'viola and exile') is his first solo EP. The work connects creative music with poetry by Konstantinos Kavafis (Greece), Salwa Zakzak (Syria) and André Weckmann (Alsace). Old travel stories resonate in the present. Home is not just a country, but also a scent, an accent and a shared melody.
Two sets with special guests
The concert consists of two sets. In the first set, Karam Al Zouhir plays solo viola. In the second set, Oene van Geel (five-string violin) and Modar Salam (percussion) are also on stage.
