Iconic Dutch landmarks
Amsterdam is beautiful, but outside the city lies a completely different Netherlands. In less than half an hour's drive, you will find windmills, fishing villages, and a way of life that has barely changed for centuries. This tour takes you to three of the most beautiful places in the area.
Zaanse Schans
More than ten historic windmills stand along the banks of the Zaan, freely accessible and impressive up close. Some mills can also be viewed from the inside for a small surcharge.
Volendam
A walk along De Dijk and through the harbor area of this typical fishing village does not disappoint. Visit the Cheese Factory for a tasting and learn how Dutch cheese is made. Tip: if you stay for lunch, order the freshly caught fish.
Marks
You can reach the former island of Marken by boat — a beautiful 30-minute trip across the IJsselmeer past Monnickendam and Katwoude. Once ashore, stroll through the characteristic narrow streets and visit a traditional clog workshop where clogs are still made using a 100-year-old steam engine.
