A hidden work of art in the Zuidas
From the outside, the Thomaskerk looks like an ordinary church. Located on the edge of the Zuidas, the church does not stand out much. The building is made of ordinary yellow bricks. Therefore, you would not readily think that the Thomaskerk is one of the most important examples of Dutch church architecture after 1945. But once you have been inside, you see how special the building is. Then you understand that the Thomaskerk is actually a hidden work of art.
Where religion and culture meet
What makes the St. Thomas Church special is that, in addition to a church hall, the building also has its own theater. Religion and culture thus come together here. According to Sijmons (the architect of the church), connecting religion and culture is precisely an important function of a church building.
Over the years, many activities in St. Thomas Church have dealt with the connection between culture and religion. Both subjects concern human vulnerability, criticism of society, and beauty.
St. Thomas Church opened in 1966. The building has since been designated as a municipal monument.
