Flowers of Amsterdam Cycleseeing Route: Holland in bloom

Think of Holland and you think of one flower. The tulip. In 1637 at the height of tulip mania, tulips were being sold for more than the price of a luxurious Amsterdam house. The Flower Route begins at the Bloemenmarkt (Flower Market) in Amsterdam and ends in Aalsmeer, near the largest flower auction in the world. If you like flowers, this is the route for you.

Cycle route highlights:

The Bloemenmarkt in Amsterdam is the only floating flower market in the world. As cycling is prohibited here, walk past the stalls pushing your bike. The market is built on barges dating back to the days when flowers were brought in from the countryside by boat.

If you've brought a picnic, Vondelpark is the ideal place on the way out or on the return journey. It is also the perfect place to wander in search of unusual plants and flowers. In 2017, schoolchildren planted 30,000 tulip bulbs at the Vondelpark monument.

Aalsmeer

Aalsmeer has the world's largest flower auction. Every day, 12 million flowers are sold at FloraHolland. You will also pass the old auction, the original venue where all the flowers were bought and sold.
