Het Nederlands Marionettentheater

Since 1923, children, parents and grandparents have enjoyed the special performances that can be seen in Het Nederlands Marionettentheater. The characteristic dolls play various well-known fairytales in colourful sets framed by poetic music. Partly thanks to the unique movement system, it is easy to forget that they are puppets. In 2021, the Dutch Marionette Theater exchanged its Amsterdam location for a national monument in Edam.

Entrancing stories

Established in 1923, the theatre maintains the traditions of marionette art and puppetry while also blending in new ideas.

Numerous characteristic puppets perform with humour and passion, accompanied by poetic music and set in colourful stage settings.

Some of the theatre’s most famous fairytales include Rumpelstiltskin, Pinocchio, Puss in Boots and The Magic Violin.

Productions are in Dutch, but the music and visuals of these performances ensure that non-Dutch-speaking young (and old) audiences will be utterly entranced by the stories. And after the performance, visitors can take a peek behind the scenes and even take a poster home.
