Premiere: Two Seas and Sumuku

Music as the voice of the climate

EarthSonic is a global project by In Place of War that tells the story of climate change through music. The project collaborates with Indigenous communities, musicians, scientists, and climate activists. At NXT Museum, as part of ADE Arts & Culture 2026, EarthSonic presents two new installations and a live AV set.

Sumuku Installation: ecological knowledge from Sabah

Sumuku explores the traditional ecological knowledge of the Kadazandusun community in Sabah through the Magavau chants of the Bobolian community. Paul Hartnoll (Orbital) processed field and plant data from the Sabah rainforest into new music. Visual artist Ben Sheppee (Observatory) and Alistair Lomas completed the installation.

Installation Two Seas : two seas, one climate story

Two Seas tells the story of the melting Gulf of Bothnia in Oulu, Finland, and the vanished Aral Sea in Muynak, Uzbekistan. Paranoid London created music from recordings from both seas together with Finnish and Uzbek artists. Ben Sheppee and Matt Black (Coldcut) transformed this into an immersive installation and live audiovisual performance.

In-depth conversation and interactive start

The evening starts with Roland's Electronic Petting Zoo, an interactive station featuring field recordings by EarthSonic. This is followed by a discussion with Matt Black (Coldcut), Paul Hartnoll (Orbital), Quinn Whalley (Paranoid London), and representatives of the Bobolian community. Are you interested?
