Excavation during the Amsterdam 800 celebration
The burial of time capsules is a historical custom often observed during special occasions, such as construction projects, world fairs, or the unveiling of monuments. In 2075, during the celebration of Amsterdam's 800th anniversary, the capsule will be dug up again by the then-current child mayor.
What's in it?
The contents of the time capsule have been carefully selected and packed in airtight containers to ensure they withstand the test of time. The items include:
- Ten portraits of Amsterdam residents created by Humans of Amsterdam.
- The three winning stories from the “My Amsterdam in the Future” competition for Amsterdam high school students.
- Amsterdam 750 commemorative coin.
- A video by FC Centrum about Amsterdam in 2025, featuring everything from matcha lattes and fat bikes to the best places to buy croquettes.
- A letter from Mayor Femke Halsema.
- Spoken word piece by Gershwin Bonevacia about Amsterdam’s future.
- Poem “Proud of the City” by Jesse Laport, inspired by the first Youth Symposium at the Royal Palace on Dam Square.
- A small magazine with stories about freedom, tolerance, and diversity, created by the Voices of Tolerance youth community in collaboration with artist Maha Eljak.
