The river flows silently through one of China's ancient cities, yet it bears witness to everything that happens on and around its banks. It is a repository of filth, chaos, and poverty, but also a repository of memories and secrets, as director Lou Ye knows. He grew up in Shanghai, where he spent his youth on the banks of the Suhzou River.
