‘During the national commemoration of Remembrance Day on Dam Squaer, we remember all – civilians and soldiers – who have been killed or murdered in the Kingdom of the Netherlands or anywhere else in the world in war situations or during peacekeeping operations since the outbreak of the Second World War. Ever since the end of the Second World War, the Netherlands has been commemorating its dead on 4 May. As from 1961, the Dutch victims of the Second World War are remembered together with Dutch victims of other conflicts, wars and peacekeeping missions that have taken place since the outbreak of the Second World War in the Netherlands.

National Remembrance Day on Dam Square

The National Commemoration takes place at the National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam. The King and Queen lay a wreath on behalf of the entire Dutch population, and (grand)children lay wreaths on behalf of survivors for various groups of war victims. Prior to the ceremony on Dam Square, there is a memorial service in De Nieuwe Kerk.

Fixed parts of this commemoration

During the National Commemoration, a writer delivers the May 4th address in De Nieuwe Kerk. This takes place prior to the wreath-laying ceremony.

Speech on Dam Square: The speech on Dam Square is a fixed part of the National Commemoration.

Lecture on Dam Square: Every year, a young person from the province where the start of the National Liberation Celebration takes place on May 5th gives a lecture on Dam Square.
