15-year-old Charlotte Flax (Winona Ryder) grows up with a mother who leads a lifestyle of her own. Mrs. Flax (Cher) moves the family to a different city time and again whenever a relationship ends. Charlotte longs for stability and peace, but rarely finds it. She struggles with her identity and seeks her own path in a constantly changing world.

Clashing characters in a coming-of-age story

The film Mermaids (1990) by director Richard Benjamin follows the strained bond between mother and daughter. Alongside Cher and Winona Ryder, Christina Ricci also stars as the younger sister Kate. The story is set in the 1960s and shows how different personalities within one family clash, grow, and yet still need each other.
