Lady Bird

A coming-of-age story about identity and resistance

Lady Bird is the directorial debut of actress Greta Gerwig. The film follows Christine, a teenage girl in Sacramento who calls herself 'Lady Bird'. She rebels against her surroundings, her school, and especially her mother. Saoirse Ronan plays her convincingly: headstrong, funny, and vulnerable all at the same time. The film is set in 2002 and paints a relatable picture of growing up in a typical American city.

The battle between mother and daughter

The relationship between Lady Bird and her mother (played by Laurie Metcalf) forms the heart of the film. Both want the best for themselves, but clash on almost every point. Lady Bird dreams of studying at a university in New York. Her mother sees things differently. Gerwig portrays this tension with humor and honesty, without giving either of them the benefit of the doubt.
