Abracadabra Quest
The 'Golden Age of Magic'
Magicians and illusionists have been around forever. But around 1900, something changes: magicians leave the market square and the fairground and start performing in large theatres. With dazzling shows and spectacular acts, they become the superstars of their time: the 'Golden Age of Magic' has arrived.
Jewish illusionists play a key role in the development of this performing art. The profession of entertainer offers opportunities for Jews who are still excluded from many other professions: on stage, only talent counts!
In Abracadabra you will meet iconic magicians such as Harry Houdini, Horace Goldin and Alexander and Adelaide Herrmann. In an era of technological innovation, they develop their own tricks and acts. The world-famous Okito comes from the Dutch-Jewish Bamberg family. For 6 generations they have been active as magicians and thus embody the heyday of the profession.
Disappearing, escaping, floating, dangerous illusions, how does that work?
In the exhibition, you get a look behind the scenes. You can also try these tricks yourself: saw your mother in half or make your little brother disappear. Hans Klok, the most famous illusionist in the Netherlands and beyond, will help you with it. The exhibition is created for young and old.
