About the Queer Choir Amsterdam

The Queer Choir Amsterdam is an artistic initiative and a safe space where different identities and voices are celebrated and heard. Queer Choir Amsterdam performs original compositions, written by the choir members and arranged by conductor Vera Morais, in which soundscapes, improvisation, and audience participation come together.

During rehearsals and performances, the choir members express ideas about what their most desirable future looks like and stories they enjoy sharing with each other and their audience. By uniting all these different voices, they not only create new harmonies but also acknowledge the diverse nature of the human voice. QCA: We don't sing to sound beautiful, we sing to make our voices heard! This has worked out well, as the choir has already performed in many different venues and at various festivals, including the Holland Festival, Buro Stedelijk, Vrankrijk, W139, Buurtwerkplaats Noorderhof, Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, and the Antwerp Queer Arts Festival.

About Vera Morais

Vera Morais is a Portuguese singer, improviser, and composer based in Amsterdam. Her work, primarily influenced by jazz and classical music, focuses on the interplay between composition and improvisation and on the instrumental character of the voice. She is interested in exploring new expressive dimensions of the voice by stretching its technical possibilities and questioning its traditional role in music. Vera studied classical music at the Conservatório de Música do Porto (Portugal), jazz at ESMAE (Portugal), and at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. In addition to her own projects, she is the choir conductor and arranger for the Queer Choir Amsterdam, led by artists Shreya de Souza, Mylou Oord, and Sarah Naqvi.
