Essentials is specially designed for those with little or no experience with symphonic music. Discover must-hear masterpieces, performed by the Concertgebouw Orchestra and creatively introduced by Thomas Vanderveken. At Essentials, we welcome a new generation of music lovers, and there is a pleasantly informal atmosphere.

Beethoven's Fifth

They are perhaps the most famous four notes in music history: the 'pa-pa-pa-paaaa' with which Beethoven knocks on the door in his Fifth Symphony . But far more remarkable is what happens next. From the simple motif, a particularly ingenious structure unfolds that still sounds just as urgent more than 200 years later and continues to surprise. Under the direction of Riccardo Minasi, the Concertgebouw Orchestra brings this dazzling hit from the early nineteenth century back to life. Beforehand, another hit from the nineteenth century will be performed that has remained much less well-known – in fact, Emilie Mayer's Faust Overture will be heard in the Netherlands for the first time – and rightly so!

Essentials begins at 9:00 PM with a stimulating introduction to the program.
