50 years of Hoketus : a milestone in Dutch music history
In 1976, Louis Andriessen released his composition Hoketus . The piece was a bombshell. No soft melodies, but hard-hitting rhythms, raw sounds, and hypnotic repetition. Hoketus laid the foundation for what would later become minimal music and electronic music. Its influence can be heard in genres ranging from minimal to techno. Ensemble Hoketus performs the original work live at the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ in Amsterdam.
A new composition that challenges the original
Michael Gordon, co-founder of the influential Bang on a Can collective from New York, is writing a mirror composition especially for this anniversary. His work confronts Andriessen's original. Not a homage, but an independent piece that responds to the energy and structure of Hoketus . The result is an evening where old and new meet and clash.
Music that keeps moving
The performance takes place during the Amsterdam Dance Event, the international platform for electronic music. That is no coincidence: the roots of much club music lie partly in the work of Andriessen. Are you interested in adventurous, idiosyncratic music that pushes boundaries?
