Great Pianists: Alexander Malofeev

A titanic technique, but also a subtly humorous tone: Alexander Malofeev employs both during his recital in the Great Pianists series. The young Russian chooses works by Grieg and his compatriot Rachmaninoff. According to none other than renowned conductor Riccardo Chailly, he excels in the music of the latter composer. This concert takes place in the Main Hall of the Royal Concertgebouw.

Alexander Malofeev
The press speaks of 'absolute mastery of the piano' and refers to Alexander Malofeev as a 'phenomenon'. This young Russian, born in 2001, has already enchanted many a listener at the grand piano, including at the Concertgebouw. His program includes Rachmaninoff, among others. None other than conductor Riccardo Chailly called Malofeev an excellent interpreter of Rachmaninoff's music.
Grieg and Rachmaninoff
The incredible diversity of the music from shortly before the First World War can be seen in countless works, including the Second Piano Sonata, which Rachmaninoff composed in Rome in 1913. Rachmaninoff's Opus 36 is one of the masterpieces that only pianists with titanic technique may attempt. Grieg's Holberg Suite, thirty years his senior, requires a different approach: the Baroque movements of this 'wig music'—as Grieg himself put it—benefit from a subtly humorous tone.
