A heavenly feast
Gustav Mahler was a man with a dual career. From the age of 37, he conducted the Vienna Hofoper for ten years, and the last three years of his life he was active in New York. As a composer, he endured considerable criticism, primarily from his Viennese audiences. In Amsterdam, things were quite different, where Willem Mengelberg fiercely defended him. This program features his Fourth Symphony , featuring the magnificent Wunderhorn anthem "Das himmlische Leben" (The Himmlische Life ), sung by Chen Reiss.
Mozart of the 21st century
Chen Reiss opens the concert with a "farewell aria" by Mozart. This aria symbolizes this final concert in which Lahav Shani leads the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra as chief conductor. Shani introduces us to the very young Georgian composer and pianist Tsotne Zedginidze, hailed by none other than Daniel Barenboim as the Mozart of the 21st century.
