One of America's most distinctive orchestras, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, opens our concert season with Dvořák's Ninth Symphony, 'From the New World'. Czech warmth and American inspiration come together in this familiar and adventurous music. Chief Conductor Manfred Honeck also conducts his troops in Barber's Violin Concerto, with soloist Augustin Hadelich, and Four Black American Dances by our composer in residence for the 2026-2027 season: Carlos Simon.

Dvořák's Symphony No. 9

It is one of the most beloved orchestral works: Dvořák's Ninth Symphony , 'From the New World'. From the very first bars, you feel the energy of a composer looking at America with wonder, where he had moved to teach at the conservatory in New York. Dvořák combines Czech warmth with American inspiration: motifs from spirituals and folkloric colors make the music familiar and adventurous at the same time. During the performance, orchestra and audience embark on an exciting journey, full of poetry and energy. An infectious season opener by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra surprises, moves, and inspires, and is an ensemble with class and heart: these and other words of praise can be read in reviews of one of America's most characterful orchestras. Under the direction of chief conductor Manfred Honeck, it performs the season opening at the Concertgebouw with pieces that reveal the orchestra's flexibility: the musicians gladly and frequently take on musical challenges. Tonight, they accompany the outstanding violinist Augustin Hadelich in Barber's Violin Concerto and perform Dvořák's popular Ninth Symphony . To complete the palette of colors , Four Black American Dances by our composer-in-residence Carlos Simon is also on the program.
