A musical journey around John Dowland
John Dowland (1562–1626), the master of melancholy, is central to this special commemorative programme. Under the direction of conductor Sjef van Leunen, the Amsterdams Kamerkoor performs beautiful choral works and arrangements of his famous songs from the English Renaissance.
Bass-baritone Wessel van der Ham and lutenist Lóránt Illyés add a few intimate songs, in which voice and lute meet in a special way.
An atmospheric introduction to the versatile and timeless music of John Dowland. From source of inspiration to follower
Dowland was in the middle of a lively musical tradition. He was inspired by composers such as Orlando di Lasso and Luca Marenzio and was a contemporary of Thomas Morley.
The cheerful motif Fa, la la la, la also appears in their music, a surprising contrast to Dowland's melancholic sound world. His influence subsequently resonates in music by, among others, Orlando Gibbons, John Wilbye and Thomas Tomkins.
In this way, Dowland’s Tears takes you through a rich musical world of melancholy, playfulness and inspiration.
