Classical Highlights

Together with top musicians and host Camiel Jansen, we explore what makes the recognizable tunes of the great classical masterpieces so beautiful and special. Tonight, you can enjoy true cello masterpieces. Saint-Saëns fulfilled all cellist dreams with his classic The Swan , and Brahms is the cello composer par excellence. Camille Thomas also surprises with Piazzolla and Aznavour, thereby adding a new sound to the list of cello classics.

Cello Classics

To be perfectly honest? Only three works that cellist Camille Thomas selected for her cello evening are in the canon of the cello repertoire. Gounod's romantic melody set to Bach's perfect harmonies (which Gounod even corrected…) is iconic. Bach is also prominently present in Brahms' sonata, and Saint-Saëns' Swan fulfills every cellist's dream. Piazzolla may not be a sing-along yet, but he is well on his way to becoming a modern classic. The lesser-known pieces pique curiosity and contribute just as much to the overall picture of the cello, that magnificent instrument.
