The mythical figure Ahania

Samy Moussa conducts the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in a program centered on Polish influences and featuring original works. Between Prokofiev's Scythian Suite , Szymanowski, and Lutosławski, the Dutch premiere of Moussa's Ahania's Lament will be performed, with Aphrodite Patoulidou as soloist. This Greek soprano is an 'NXT GEN artist,' convincing in repertoire ranging from Mahler to metal and from Vivier to folk. Under Moussa, William Blake's mythical figure Ahania receives no anecdotal coloring, but rather a ritualistic voice: the soprano is less a psychological character than a mouthpiece for a collective lament.

Here, the orchestra forms a space in which the voice finds its place: undulating, often shimmering textures that show a kinship with the Polish orchestral tradition, yet take on distinctly contemporary contours. In the context of Szymanowski and Lutosławski, it becomes audible how Moussa manages to maintain the continuity of an orchestral sound while simultaneously putting it under tension.
