On Sunday afternoon, a selection of musicians kisses the Baroque to life. Today, the inventive violinist Shunske Sato, together with friends, performs royal music. In the atmosphere of Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, works by Bach, Benda, and Quantz resound alongside a sonata by Frederick the Great. A concert on the border of Baroque and Classicism.

Shunske Sato and friends

Shunske Sato, born in Tokyo, is a violinist, conductor, chamber musician, soloist, and teacher; this entire list reflects his versatile and inventive character. He was given a violin at the age of two. For a long time, he was artistic director and concertmaster of the Netherlands Bach Society, so historically informed performance practice is his spearhead. Alongside his supreme craftsmanship, he cherishes his passion for languages, history, interior architecture, and cooking. This afternoon, together with kindred spirits, he kisses Baroque gems to life.

Bach, Benda and music of a king

Anyone visiting Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam cannot escape the grandeur of the Prussian monarchs, with Frederick the Great as the driving force. His attention was focused not only on castles and parks, but also on music: Quantz, Benda, and Bach Jr. all worked at his court. The royal music evenings were enriched by special guests: the elderly Bach dropped by, played the organ, and composed his Musikalisches Opfer on a theme by Frederick himself. Bach's Trio Sonata concludes an afternoon program on the border between Baroque and Classicism.
