New urban visions in Amsterdam’s Nieuw-West

Within the Netherlands, second-world-war and post-war architecture and urban planning hit its peak in Amsterdam Nieuw-West, under the direction of Van Eesteren. At the centre of Van Eesteren’s vision was the ‘functional city’, in which housing, work, recreation and traffic were separated.

The museum

The Van Eesterenmuseum consists of an indoor exhibition hall – the ‘actual’ museum – and an outdoor part, an open-air museum in the immediate vicinity, including model flats as well as the squares, roads, parks and schools of the neighbourhood. Tours are offered regularly.
