Amsterdam Celebrates 750th Anniversary

On Monday, 27 October 2025, the moment will finally arrive; Amsterdam will truly blow out 750 candles. After a year full of activities in the city, we will end with a grand celebration! How, what, and where… that will be announced later.

SAIL Amsterdam occurs once every five years and is one of the city's largest events. The tenth edition is set to commence in August 2025. A massive fleet of large ships and various other special vessels sail across the IJ and dock near the city center. Sail 2025 coincides with two other significant anniversaries: the 50th anniversary of Sail (which was first organized in 1975) and the 750th anniversary of the city of Amsterdam. It's a triple celebration.

SAIL-In Parade

The SAIL-In Parade opens SAIL 2025 on Wednesday 20 August. From 10:00 to 18:00 Tall Ships, naval vessels and sailing heritage will sail across the North Sea Canal to the IJhaven. A fraternizing celebration that connects visitors and crews from all over the world.

This year the spire on the roof of the Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam will be restored. A large platform will be placed on the roof for this restoration. As part of 750 years Amsterdam, the public will have the unique opportunity to climb the roof of this monument for an unforgettable view of our capital.

Kwaku Summer Festival is celebrating its birthday, just like the city itself. What started 50 years ago as a football tournament for the neighbourhood has now been a grand celebration of the identity of the Zuidoost district for years. The Nelson Mandela Park will be the scene of dance, music, film, food and of course football for four weekends.

In 2025, the Grachtenfestival will return to Amsterdam for the 28th edition. At the Grachtenfestival everything starts with music. Young musicians from all over the world surprise you with their own musical stories. With more than 95 locations, the Grachtenfestival will again be present this year in all parts of Amsterdam, with many free neighborhood concerts, but also at unique locations such as the Royal Palace on Dam Square, the ARTIS Planetarium and Fabrique des Lumières. This ensures that the Canal Festival always continues to innovate and allows visitors to (re)discover the city.

From 20 to 24 August 2025, Amsterdam will mark its 750th anniversary with the spectacular 10th edition of SAIL Amsterdam. Majestic tall ships, passionate crews, and curious visitors from across the globe will gather along the River IJ to honour centuries of maritime heritage and diverse perspectives. More than just a nautical celebration, this unforgettable event promises wonder, connection, and a festive spirit for all.
