Celebrate Lunar New Year in Amsterdam

Lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year, is a major celebration in China and across Asia, including Korea, Singapore, and the Philippines. It marks the start of the lunar calendar year. In 2026, it will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 17, welcoming the Year of the Horse, which symbolises energy and independence. Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Celebrate Chinese New Year on and around Nieuwmarkt and the Zeedijk, Amsterdam’s Chinatown, where traditional lion and dragon dances, music, performances and cultural activities take place throughout the day.

Visit Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple

Head to the Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple in Amsterdam's Chinatown for special New Year rituals and celebrations. This Buddhist temple is a focal point for cultural and spiritual observances during the Lunar New Year.

Experience a dragon parade

The dragon dance is an ancient traditional dance believed to bring luck and prosperity. An iconic celebration that Amazing Oriental performs annually at various locations. The dragon parades will take place on 29 January at Nieuwmarkt, 3 February at Max Eeuweplein next to Paradiso, and 10 February in front of the Buddhist temple on Zeedijk. On 17 February, you can expect grand festivities on Dam Square.

Get creative at the Wereldmuseum

From 14 February to 1 March, the Wereldmuseum hosts a range of Lunar New Year-themed activities. Make your own lanterns featuring the zodiac horse or join other hands-on workshops that bring festive traditions to life.

Savour Asian cuisine

Many of Amsterdam’s Chinese restaurants and Asian eateries in Chinatown and beyond offer special menus or celebratory dishes during the Lunar New Year period. Amsterdam's nightlife scene celebrates the Chinese New Year with a variety of themed parties, club nights, and community gatherings. On Monday, February 23rd, Chin Chin Club will open its doors to kick off a prosperous year with an event called Fine Asia. Additionally, Club Raum will celebrate the Lunar New Year on February 20th with an atmosphere full of energy and freedom.
