Unsuk Chin - Alice in Wonderland
Dream world full of fairytale music
With the performance of Unsuk Chin's Alice in Wonderland, this work will have its Dutch premiere, after the opera was first performed with great success at the Bayerische Staatsoper in 2007. The bizarre adventures of the young girl Alice in a hallucinatory dream-world full of fantasy figures inspired Chin to create her most evocative music.
Wonderful echoes from music history
In the first part, the atmospheric orchestra circles around the alienating complications and emotions of the main character. In the second part this quality is combined with distorted fragments and distant echoes from our music history. For a moment, Kortjakje is always ill , then a harmonica accompanies the soup choir of the Mock Turtle. A highlight is the Advice from a Caterpillar, in which a caterpillar playing bass clarinet repeatedly rubs up against the blue notes of Gershwin and Stravinsky's opening bars of the Sacre. The title role is played by soprano Gloria Rehm.
