Mahler's moving Das Lied von der Erde
Feride Büyükdenktaş and Stuart Jackson
The Recital Hall is dedicated to Mahler's most beautiful songs during the Mahler Festival. Perhaps the most important song accompanist of the moment, pianist Julius Drake, flanks his favourite vocalists. Today, these are Feride Büyükdenktaş and Stuart Jackson. Together, they sing the moving Das Lied von der Erde in Mahler's own version for two vocalists and piano.
Das Lied von der Erde
Six narrative movements make up Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde. He based the songs on texts about nature, death and life. He used ancient Chinese texts in German translation. A 'drinking song on the earthly vale of tears' starts a stirring series of reflections on farewell and new beginnings. Das Lied von der Erde was written for two voices. On 14 May, you will hear Feride Büyükdenktaş, a Turkish mezzo-soprano who has already shone on the major opera stages of Vienna, Stuttgart and Istanbul. British tenor Stuart Jackson gets jubilant reviews at home and is now singing more often across the globe.
Mahler Festival
From 9 to 18 May 2025, Het Concertgebouw is organizing a major Mahler Festival for the third time. After the Mahler Festivities in 1920 and 1995, all of Mahler's symphonies will be heard again in the Main Hall. Among others, they will be performed by the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Concertgebouw Orchestra, which was once conducted by Mahler himself. A selection of top soloists and choirs, led by conductors such as Iván Fischer and Jaap van Zweden, devote themselves to these monumental works. More information about the Mahler Festival can be found here.
Amsterdam 750
On 27 October 2025, Amsterdam will celebrate its 750th anniversary, marking a year-long celebration. Starting on 27 October 2024, a jubilee year full of activities for all Amsterdammers begins.
