Johan van Oldenbarnevelt
Johan van Oldenbarnevelt (1547-1619), as Grand Pensionary of Holland, was the most important administrator in the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. He stood at the cradle of the VOC and played a major role in the 80 Years War. He worked closely with Prince Maurits, the son of William of Orange, who eventually accused him of treason. Oldenbarnevelt was beheaded in public in the Binnenhof at the age of 71. Was the execution justified or did he deserve better?
