The Movies

After a closure of two and a half years, The Movies, the oldest cinema in Amsterdam, has reopened. After the reopening, The Movies will continue its line in terms of programming: a mix of the finest new arthouse films, the best of Hollywood, documentaries and classics.

Arthouse

The Movies is the oldest cinema in Amsterdam (although De Uitkijk also has a shot at that title) and a household name for Amsterdammers. The film theater is located on the Haarlemmerdijk and has four cinemas, all decorated in a classic Art Deco style. The Movies mainly shows art house films, documentaries and the better Hollywood productions.

History

The Movies was founded in 1912 under the name Bioscoop Tavenu. Two years later the name was changed to Cinema Hollandia and the current name was chosen in the 1970s.
