Stephanie's Friends

Seven women rehearse for a benefit performance. They also scrutinize their romantic relationships. Between the lines, it becomes visible how they navigate their way within a patriarchal society. The language of this play is Dutch.
Stephanie's Friends
Inspired by and based on Irene Fornès
Stephanie's Girlfriends is inspired by a play by the Cuban Irene Fornès (1930-2018). She emigrated to New York and became the lover of philosopher Susan Sontag.
That a queer woman like Fornès, with such an enormous oeuvre, is relatively unknown… quite striking, isn’t it? She still influences theater worldwide. Just four years ago, Philip Glass based an opera on one of her 40 plays. Fornès often created gay characters in her works. She said: “Being gay does not mean you belong to a different species. We are just people.”
