Animal behavior that makes you look at things differently

Intersex kangaroos, penguin trios, same-sex parenting, and mating lionesses: nature is full of surprises. In this interactive theater lecture, emeritus ARTIS biologist Charlotte Vermeulen takes you through the colorful world of sexual diversity in the animal kingdom. She conducted research into sexually diverse behavior in animals for about 30 years as resident biologist at ARTIS.

What you discover about 1,500 species

Homosexual behavior has already been observed in more than 1,500 species of birds and mammals. Some fish change from male to female and back. Different sexual preferences, the absence of sex, and sex changes: it all occurs in nature. Charlotte Vermeulen shows how our own expectations do not always correspond with what really happens in the animal kingdom.

Humor and science in the ARTIS-Groote Museum Amsterdam

Comedian Maya van As hosts the evening with humor. With lighthearted interludes, she guides you through this intriguing subject. The theater lecture takes place in the ARTIS-Groote Museum, a unique location amidst the historic surroundings of the ARTIS Zoo in Amsterdam.
