Come to the opening of Our HERitage's photo exhibition at OBA Oosterdok on February 8th. Discover 12 portraits of Caribbean foremothers exploring love, family, identity, and shared heritage. Featuring a welcome by Fausia S. Abdul, a keynote address by Prof. Valika Smeulders, contributions from Liesbeth Smit, Susi & Simba Mosis, Tiarra Simon, and Robby Kibbelaar, and a performance by Reframing HERstory.

About the program

The opening offers a rich program with an introduction by Our HERitage founder Fausia S. Abdul about the project and the theme of "love" in the colonial context. This will be followed by a keynote lecture by Prof. Valika Smeulders, Head of Collections at the Rijksmuseum, on how women of color have been portrayed throughout the centuries. An apinti performance by Susi and Simba Mosis will be followed by a book review with Liesbeth Smit about taboos, choices, and how colonial traces are still palpable in contemporary relationships. Researcher Matthijs Kraijo will also lead an intergenerational discussion with Tiarra Simon and Robby Kibbelaar about the power and legacy of foremothers. What does love mean through the eyes of a foremother, a mother, a daughter, and a granddaughter?

Performance and photo exhibition

Reframing HERstory Art Foundation brings to life "swartin" Anna van Vossenburg: a woman born into slavery in Suriname who came to Arnhem with her two daughters in the 18th century and is finally given a voice. After the program, you can enjoy a drink and browse the photo exhibition and chat with other visitors and participants.
