About the exhibition

The exhibition showcases Caribbean foremothers about love, family, identity and shared heritage. Their stories show how love and strength shape our society today. An intimate photo exhibition with 12 portraits, most of the portrayed foremothers are descended from Amsterdam descendants. The women come to life again and show how heritage continues to influence who we are today.

Our HERitage

Our HERitage is an interdisciplinary heritage project that makes visible the colonial history of the Caribbean region through 50 historical portraits of diverse Caribbean foremothers. 12 Caribbean regions, 11 subcultures and the voice of women. The project breaks through stereotypes and shows how rich, diverse and layered our Dutch society is today. The stories of the foremothers of the participants from Amsterdam will be included in the Amsterdam Museum's project 'Ode aan de voormoeders'.

'Her Love, Her Story' can be seen from February 3rd to March 9th at the photo gallery, OBA Oosterdok.
