Discover the divine within yourself
Melyn Chow grew up in Singapore in a Christian family. Her father's temple in Malaysia was 'forbidden territory'. She learned that non-Christian gods were 'unclean' and 'spiritually dangerous'. This project stems from the desire to explore precisely the place that was denied to her as a child. A risky and tender journey of discovery.
A mystical quest
Let yourself be carried away on a thrilling journey of discovery full of contradiction. Melyn seeks the divine without knowing the outcome. In a society that has lost touch with the sacred, Becoming God offers a sanctuary for rituals and transformation.
Music and movement
Melyn is accompanied by live music, movement, and a performative score. Composer Lưu Thoại Linh (Animistic Beliefs) and performers Sjaid Foncé and Nazar Rakhmanov support her. Together, they conduct a playful, dedicated, and unpredictable exploration of a forbidden, mystical world.
A unique study
The source of inspiration for Becoming God is Melyn's uncle, Chow Tek Sen. He is a Chinese medium (tang ki) who offers his body to the gods. This practice, called 跳童, forms an important framework. Within this framework, Melyn explores identity and soul. Experience Becoming God and become part of a powerful theatrical ritual.
