Disco in Amsterdam: how it started
In the 1970s and 1980s, disco changed nightlife forever. A new sound wafted over to Amsterdam from New York, and the city embraced it. Clubs like Vrijhaven became places of freedom, dance, and self-expression. During this ADE Arts & Culture program at the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam, you will explore that period: what made disco so special, and for whom was it a home?
An evening with pioneers and DJs
Disco legend Eddy de Clercq and DJ Sunny Jansen, along with other guests, look back on the early years of the disco scene and the DJ era. In a conversation led by moderator Manique Hendricks, they exchange stories and insights. Afterwards, DJs take over the floor with sets that follow the line from disco to house.
Performances and the exhibition Disco
In addition to music and conversations, there are performances by Amber Vineyard and Juno Dijkshoorn, among others. The Disco exhibition at the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam is open all evening. This way, you combine music, stories, and visuals in one evening. Are you interested? You can find tickets for this event via the booking link.
