Harvesting as part of an artwork

In the public space of the Sluisbuurt, we gather during Open Monument Day to harvest a large circle of flax that is part of the temporary artwork VlasPlein.

Together with local residents, experts, and other curious visitors, you are warmly welcome to join in and celebrate our local harvest together. We do this while collectively enjoying a snack brought by everyone themselves, following the 'sprokkelpot' principle.

What exactly is going to happen?

Together with artist Annee Grøtte Viken and curator Jules van den Langenberg, it will be a moment when a large circle of flax is harvested. The flaxseed will be processed by a local miller into linseed oil as a base for paint.

Using a traditional painting technique that imitates wood and other materials, benches, streetlights, and trash cans in public spaces are subsequently painted, giving these everyday objects a striking appearance. A vintage Friso Kramer streetlight treated with this technique is already on display during the Harvest Festival.

After a flourishing Sowing Symposium last May, the Harvest Festival this coming September marks a successful completion of the temporary public artwork Vlasplein.

The meeting is part of the Construction Site Discussions series by the Nelly & Theo van Doesburg Foundation and is supported by the Municipality of Amsterdam, the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, the Polder Triennial Foundation, and the Cultural Fund.

Practical information

Location: outdoors, Sluisbuurt, Zeeburgereiland (Amsterdam), on the grounds between tram stop Zuiderzeeweg and Anna Pavlovastraat, at coordinates 52°22'24.3"N 4°57'40.6"E.

Time: continuously from 16:00 to 18:00.

You are invited to bring something to eat and drink.

No registration required, free admission, donations are welcome.

The event takes place outdoors, in a public space. Please take changing weather conditions into account.
