A Japanese indie film about family and unexpected connection

In Ranshima Bound by director Yoshitaka Kamada, the lonely punk musician Yoshio returns to his hometown after years. The reason: his mother is in the hospital following a suicide attempt. Along the way, he takes Maki with him, a woman he meets that same night by the Tama River. He introduces her to his brother as his wife.

Poetic and with dry humor

Yoshio and Maki's fake married life unfolds in the cool, remote surroundings of Hokkaido. Kamada uses the chilly landscapes of the Japanese North as a mirror for his characters' emotions. The film combines an understated style with bone-dry humor, resulting in a unique viewing experience.
