On freedom of speech and the role of art in times of conflict

In the summer of 2025, graffiti artist Niels Bakkerus decides to no longer remain silent about the situation in Gaza. In clean, graphic letters, he puts the message “Fuck Israel, Free Palestine” on a wall in the Eindhovense Berenkuil. What begins as one personal expression grows into a three-month-long battle in which activism, censorship, and creativity come together.

Every time his work disappears, Bakkerus returns with a new message, with the ongoing confrontation putting his creativity to the test. The wall turns into a living work of art in which every layer of paint reflects the debate. What starts locally resonates worldwide: the battle is followed en masse online. In the documentary ' Piece de Résistance', a story unfolds about freedom of speech and the role of art in times of conflict.

The film shows how public space is a place where controversies become visible and how one artist tries to maintain his own voice in the middle of that storm. After the film, we will have a conversation with filmmaker Anne van Bree and artist Niels Bakkerus; the evening will be moderated by Robin Vermeulen.
